History

Oxford Brookes University started its academic service provider as an art-based school known as Oxford School of Art in 1865. In the late 1890s, under the administration of the Oxford City Council's Technical Instruction Committee, the school of Science Department was added, and the academic institution was renamed as Oxford City Technical School.

In 1934, the two institutions, the School of Art and the Technical School, were merged, and John Henry Brookes, who was the head of the  School of Art, became the first principal of the merged institution. The college was again renamed as the Schools of Technology, Arts and Commerce.

In later years, the college had a significant presence of students, around 4000 students, and thus a new campus was established in 1956. The institution incorporated new subjects and study areas and became Oxford Polytechnic in 1970, and in later years, the institution also incorporated the Dorset House School of Occupational Therapy, the first school of occupational therapy in the UK.

The Oxford Brookes University, as we know it today, was established in 1992, following the enactment of the Further and Higher Education Act. Since then, the university has obtained many award-winning statuses, such as Fairtrade Status in 2003 and in 2015, Oxford Brookes University celebrated its 150th anniversary.
