Overview

The University of Reading is a public research university located in Reading, Berkshire, England, UK. This institute is regarded as a red-brick university due to its foundation in the 19th century.

Extended Overview

This institute was founded in 1892 as University College, Reading; back then it was an extension college of the University of Oxford. It was the only university to receive the power to grant its own degrees between the two world wars. This university has four major campuses. Three in the UK and one in Malaysia.

The University of Reading is a beautiful home to more than 27,000 students, of whom more than 5,000 are international students—making it an ideal place to live and study for them. It ranks as the world’s top 50 business schools, according to The Financial Times and The Economist.

It offers more than 70 undergraduate programmes, 60 postgraduate programmes, and a great range of international scholarships. The university features a sports park, a film theatre, four museums, 300,000 plant specimens, lakes, meadows, and a cherry tree orchard.

Mission Statement

The University of Reading states that ‘At the University of Reading we are committed to addressing global problems through our teaching, research and partnerships.

Our University Strategy highlights the core values that characterise the University of Reading: a love of learning; creating and sharing new knowledge; embracing and celebrating diversity of people and ideas; and caring for our environment.

We have maintained these values throughout our history and they will continue to guide us in the future as we transform the way we work.’

History

The roots of the university can be traced back to 1860 and 1870 with the establishment of the Schools of Art and Science. The College at Reading was formed in 1892 as an extension college by Christ Church, a college within the University of Oxford.

In 1926, the university gained its university status and became the University of Reading.
